Choose by what's named. A good belly oil tells you every ingredient - carrier oils doing the moisturising, essential oils at massage strength, nothing hiding behind "fragrance" or "herbal blend". Skip anything that promises to prevent stretch marks (nothing is proven to) or claims "100% safe" (nobody honestly can). Then trust the ten-minute test: if it absorbs and feels good, you'll actually use it - and use is the whole game.
Why do belly oils all look the same?
Search "belly oil" and you'll meet forty bottles making the same three promises in the same soft pink. The bottles differ less than the labels suggest - and the labels tell you everything, if you know the four lines to check.
How do you read a belly oil label?
- Line one: is everything named? A belly oil is mostly carrier oils - coconut, almond, sesame, jojoba and their cousins - doing the actual moisturising, with essential oils in small amounts for scent and skin feel. An honest label names all of them. The words that should make you squint: "fragrance", "parfum", "herbal extract blend" - anonymity in an ingredient list is a choice, and you're allowed to ask why. This is the standard we hold ourselves to, so hold everyone to it.
- Line two: what's promised? "Prevents stretch marks" is a promise the evidence doesn't back - we've written the honest version - and "100% safe" is a promise nobody can make about anything on pregnant skin. A trustworthy label talks about moisture, suppleness and comfort, because that's what an oil actually delivers.
- Line three: what's absent? No retinyl palmitate (retinol's body-lotion cousin), no hydroquinone, no mineral oil if plant oils matter to you. Specific absences beat vague purity - "no retinoids" means something; "chemical-free" means the copywriter won.
- Line four: the practical test. Absorbs within ten minutes, doesn't stain your kurta, smells like something you could love daily at week 32 when your nose is sharper than a sommelier's. The best belly oil is the one you'll actually reach for nightly, because consistency is where all the benefit lives.
