For husbands: how to actually help, with your hands

Line art - two mugs, massage oil and a cushion
The short answer

Ten minutes, most evenings: warm the oil in your palms first, start with her feet and calves, then slow flat-palmed strokes on the lower back, the bump only if she wants it. She directs pressure. Slow beats skilled, and sudden swelling with headache is a doctor call you make happen.

Why this is your job

Most of pregnancy happens to her and around you - appointments, symptoms, a body doing things you can only watch. The evening massage is the exception: a real contribution, done with your hands, that measurably improves her day. Ten minutes, most evenings, no talent required. Here's the full training.

The setup, which is half the massage

  • She should be comfortable before you start - seated with back support, or lying on her left side with a pillow between the knees; from mid-pregnancy, flat on the back gets uncomfortable fast, so don't ask it of her.
  • Warm the oil first, always: pump it into your palms and rub them together for ten seconds. Cold oil on a bare back undoes your goodwill instantly.
  • Phone in the other room. Yours, not just hers.

The technique, in three moves

Slow beats skilled.

  • Her feet and calves - thumbs in firm circles over the arch, long strokes up the calf, three or four minutes a side. By evening her feet have carried a changed body all day; Foot Please Oil exists for exactly this shift.
  • The lower back - flat palms, broad slow strokes either side of the spine, the pressure of a firm hello, never a knuckle-dig.
  • The bump, only if she wants it - palms flat, the slowest circles you own, with Belly Ease Oil or, in the last weeks, Labour Ease Oil, the evening blend built for late-pregnancy relaxation.

She directs pressure and territory; you're skilled labour, not management.

What to watch for, because you're also the observer

Massage evenings make you the person most familiar with her feet and ankles - useful, because you'll notice changes first. Swelling that's evening-only and settles overnight is common.

When should I see a doctor?

Swelling that's sudden, includes the face or hands, or arrives with a headache or blurred vision: that's a call to her doctor today, and you make it your business that the call happens.

The honest promise

Do this most evenings and two things compound: her sleep and comfort, and the fact that ten uninterrupted minutes of undivided attention, daily, is a language everyone reads fluently. The oil is the excuse. Show up anyway.

When to see a doctor

Sudden swelling - especially of the face or hands, or with headache or blurred vision - is a call to her doctor today. Evening-only foot swelling that settles overnight is the common kind.
