The route and the dose decide everything. Essential oils diluted into a carrier oil and massaged on skin - a few percent at most - sit in a different category from swallowing drops or running a diffuser all night, which is where most cautions come from. Diluted, on skin, patch-tested: that's how they're meant to be used in pregnancy. First trimester, or a doctor's note to avoid them? Ask before you start.
Are essential oils safe in pregnancy?
Few topics collect more contradictory advice than essential oils in pregnancy. One aunty swears by lavender, one blog bans everything with a scent, and somewhere in between you're holding a bottle of massage oil and wondering.
Cut through it with two questions: how much, and by what route? Most of the alarming claims about essential oils come from concentrated exposure - oils swallowed as drops, or inhaled undiluted for hours. A body-care oil works differently: the essential oils in it are diluted into a base of carrier oils at a few percent at most, applied to skin, where absorption is slow and small. That's what "massage strength" means, and it's the strength every product we make uses. Same plants, different question entirely.
How should you use essential oils safely?
The sensible rules fit on one hand:
- Diluted only - never neat essential oil on pregnant skin, whatever the shop bottle says.
- Patch test first: inner arm or behind the knee, wait a day.
- First trimester is the season for extra caution; if that's where you are, or your doctor has asked you to avoid essential oils, ask before starting anything scented - including ours.
- Your nose gets the final vote: pregnancy sharpens smell, and a scent that suddenly reads wrong is information, not fussiness.
Skip entirely:
- Swallowing any essential oil.
- Undiluted application.
- All-night diffusing in a closed room.
None of those are how skincare uses these plants anyway.
Every oil in a Harmonaly bottle is named on the pack and used at massage strength - the thinking is laid out on the What's-not-in-here page, and the nightly ritual it belongs to starts here. Questions about a specific oil and your specific trimester? That's exactly what the WhatsApp line is for.
